New Zealand warns of US travel detention risk
Kiwi travellers are being warned of a heightened risk of being detained, deported or banned from the US.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry has updated its travel advisory for America after it noted 17 New Zealanders have experienced immigration difficulties in the US in the past few months.
The travel advisory remains at Level 2 but has updated travellers on the potential for problems at the border if strict requirements are not fully adhered to.
It also warns travellers that devices like laptops and mobile phones could be inspected by Customs and Border protection officers without just cause.
Other countries such as Australia, Canada and the UK have updated their travel advice after citizens have been detained or deported for seemingly arbitrary reasons.
