A US$1.85 billion Nickelodeon theme park is being planned for Foshan, China, and is scheduled to open by 2020.

Sanshui New Town Management Committee and Elite Global have formed a partnership to develop a site in Sanshui New Town, near Foshan, under license from Nickelodeon owner Viacom.

The park will form part of the Foshan Cultural and Ecological Coastal Project, a new cultural, sports, leisure and business zone.

"We are thrilled we will develop our first branded attraction in China, which will open up further opportunities for our recreation business in Asia," said Ron Johnson, executive VP, Nickelodeon and Viacom Consumer Products.

"We look forward to working with Elite Global Group and Foshan to create a series of branded attractions that will appeal to kids and families across China."

Park attractions will be based on much loved Nickelodeon characters like SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Nickelodeon currently has theme park attractions in the US, Europe, Australia and one soon to open in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
