Nine Britons killed in Jordan coach crash
Nine British tourists who were taking part in a pilgrimage to Jordan were killed in a coach crash yesterday.
Some 24 others were injured, while the Jordanian tour guide and an Egyptian passenger also died in the crash, which reportedly happened when a tyre burst and the vehicle ploughed into a pick-up truck.
The group was on a holiday with Kent-based Pilgrim Travel, visiting sacred sites around Jordan; most of the party are reported to have come from Yorkshire.
The BBC News website quotes David Symes, of the Jordan Tourist Board in London, as saying: “This has come as a great shock and our hearts go out to the families of those involved.”
Survivors were taken to the King Hussein Medical Centre in the capital, Amman, where they were visited by King Abdullah and Prince Charles, who is in the country in an official visit.
