No long term damage to London, says study

London will not suffer long lasting damage to its tourism industry, consultants Deloitte have forecast.

Research conducted by the company suggested there would be a slow down in growth but that recovery would be quick.

It echoes of the view of other tourism bodies and industry commentators who believe mass cancellations will not arise.

“There should be every confidence in London’s recovery as a world class tourist destination,” said Deloitte global head of tourism, hospitality and leisure Alex Kyriakidis.

“Data from our HotelBenchmark Survey shows that post September 11 the recovery period was some 18 months. However, in the case of Madrid, hotel occupancies recovered to their pre-attack levels within six months. Tourism arrivals to Spain were up 3.4% in 2004 compared to 2003 with a marginal decline in the second quarter of 2004 of only 0.3%.”

He added inbound European travel would be unaffected although the US may take longer to recover.
