No planes, no flights for Nepal Airlines
KATHMANDU – Nepal’s state-run airline has suspended international services until January after its last working Boeing aircraft was sent for regular maintenance, an official said this week.
Nepal Airlines has only two planes – both Boeing 757s – for international flights.
One aircraft has been grounded due to engine problems for several months while the second needs to undergo routine maintenance.
“We have no alternative to suspending our international flights,” Nageshwar Raya, a senior airline official, told Reuters.
“We will resume fights from January 1 after one aircraft is ready for service.” He said that both planes would be back in service by March.
Efforts of the airline to purchase new aircraft were dogged by charges of corruption in the past.
Nepal Airlines flies to less than a dozen Asian cities.
