Northeast Thailand eyes F1 boost for new race track
Thailand’s northeast region hopes to follow in the footsteps of Malaysia and Singapore in becoming a stop on the formula 1 racing calendar.
Tourism Authority of Thailand Northeast region director, Somradee Chanchai is hopeful the almost completed Chang International Circuit in Buri Ram will attract more tourists to the lower Isan region.
Construction of the circuit started in 2013, and is now 95% complete, and could start hosting races such as Super GT before the end of this year.
"The circuit will be certified Grade 1 by motorsport’s governing body FIA and grade A by motorcycling’s governing body FIM," according to local politician Newin Chidchob.
"We plan to organise several motorsport events at the circuit including the World Superbike Championship in March next year," he added.
Buriram province attracts around 1.2 million tourists a year, of which just 10% are from overseas.
The race track cost THB2 billion to build and will have a capacity for 50,000 race fans.
