Now Osama wants to hide out on Hamilton Island

BRISBANE – A man purporting to be the world’s most wanted terrorist, Osama bin Laden, has applied for the job of caretaker on Hamilton Island – a A$150,000, six-month position advertised as part of a popular Tourism Queensland campaign designed to attract international visitors to the Great Barrier Reef.

On a prank (we think) video posted on YouTube, bin Laden claims he is the ideal candidate for the job, citing, among other things, his familiarity with “sandy areas” and experience in “large scale event co-ordination”.

“I’ve got experience with videos and delegating tasks,” subtitles read. “My interests include arts and craft and renovating. I’m outgoing and fun-loving.”

Tourism Queensland said, “While we encourage people to be creative in their applications, they have to meet the selection criteria, including appropriate content, if they want to be considered for the job.”

Tourism Queensland launched The Best Job in the World campaign on January 12, running advertisements in the employment sections of newspapers all over the globe.

The ads tout the duties of Great Barrier Reef island caretaker as including “cleaning the pool, collecting the mail and feeding the fish” in exchange for free accommodation on Hamilton Island and a $150,000 salary.

The successful candidate will also have to chart their six-month posting via a blog.

The promotion has already attracted more than 9000 applications from hopefuls in 162 countries and has been hailed a stroke of marketing genius.
