Olympic security worries for QM2
Security experts have raised concerns about the Queen Mary 2, the most expensive luxury ship in the world, which will be docked in “the most vulnerable” berth for the forthcoming Olympic Games in Athens.
The ship will play host to heads of state and numerous other VIP visitors during the Games but, according to The Times, will be berthed at the outer edge of Piraeus port and will be “vulnerable to attack from land, sea or air”.
A senior security source reportedly told the newspaper: “She is extremely unfavourably docked. It is the only place for her because she is so big but it is the least secure berth in the harbour. The fact is that she is a high-value asset in a dangerous place.”
The Times further quotes analysts as saying that the ship is vulnerable to suitcase bomb, rocket-propelled grenade, mine, scuba diver, small boat or submarine.” Greek authorities countered by saying that planned security around the ship “could not be more stringent”.
The QM2 is scheduled to arrive in Piraeus on 11 August and will stay until 30 August.
