On your bike: Lonely Planet takes on Africa
MELBOURNE – A Lonely Planet team is set to embark on the adventure of a lifetime, cycling the length of Africa as part of the Tour d’Afrique.
The annual race/expedition from Cairo to Cape Town will see two relay-teams from Lonely Planet, including Lonely Planet authors, staff and Lonely Planet co-founder, Tony Wheeler.
The gruelling physical and mental challenge kicks of on January 10 and will see the contenders cycle 7,375miles through 10 countries in 120 days, averaging 77 miles a day.
Wheeler said, “I could see the Tour d’Afrique was a great idea the first time I heard about it and that belief was underlined when, travelling around Ethiopian early 2005, I crossed paths with the tour.â€
Participants will raise money for charities of their choice and the Tour d’Afrique Foundation and distribute bike to health-care workers and other deserving individuals throughout the continent.
