One in four Heathrow flights delayed
UK: British airports the worst in Europe in terms of late flights
More than one in four flights out of Heathrow airport was late last year – and British airports in general have been revealed as the worst in Europe when it comes to delays.
More worrying for British passengers is that the problem is getting worse – Italy was the only other country on the continent where delays became longer and more frequent last year.
Eurocontrol, which supervises continental air movements, said that two routes in particular were subject to delays – Heathrow to Madrid and Heathrow to Oslo. The four worst airports in Europe in terms of delays were Madrid, where thirty per cent of flights were delayed last year, Dublin, Rome and Gatwick.
But while these airports suffered most delays, they were by no means the longest. The average delay at Larnaca, Cyprus, were 53 minutes, and while British Airways passengers departing Athens had only a one-in-five chance of being delayed, flights that were late were delayed by an average of nearly an hour and a quarter.
