One tourist killed and others taken hostage in Jordan attack
A Canadian tourist was among 10 people killed during a shootout at a castle in Jordan.
Security forces say four ‘terrorist outlaws’ were among the 10 who died at Karak Castle, a popular attraction.
At least 27 people were injured and several tourists were reported to have been taken hostage by gunmen who hid in the castle.
Special forces freed the hostages and a large quantity of explosives, weapons and suicide belts were seized, according to a statement from officials, who are not ruling out the possibility that the shooting was a coordinated militant attack.
Karak Castle is a medieval fort around 70 miles south of Jordan’s capital city, Amman, and on the main road to Petra.
The Foreign Office has updated its advice on Jordan, adding: "A number of people have been killed in an attack at Kerak on 18 December. You should exercise caution at this time and follow the instructions of the local authorities."
