Online agency denies overseas bookings hit by terror alerts
Online travel agency Travel Republic has disputed claims by Hoseasons that people are switching bookings to the UK following the failed terrorist attacks in London and Glasgow.
The company said bookings for the period June 29 to July 3 were up 5% on the previous week.
Bookings on Saturday, June 30 were up almost 22% on the previous week.
And the past seven days have been the strongest the business has ever seen, according to managing director Paul Furner.
“Once again, the British travelling public has showed how resilient they are,” he said.
“They accept that there will be tight security at airports but absolutely refuse to let the terrorist threat get in the way of their long-awaited summer holidays.”
But a spokesman for national tourist office VisitBritain said: “There is clear evidence that following the August 2006 incidents and consequent disruption to air travel the volume and value of domestic tourism witnessed steady growth towards the end of 2006 and into early 2007.”
