Only one South African Garden certified by Fair Trade

Althought Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden is the commonly best known garden in South Africa there is another one in the (horticultural) spotlight. This is the privately owned and non-subsidised Soekershof; Private Mazes & Botanical Gardens in South Africa which is also the only one in South Africa that is certified by Fair Trade in Tourism in South Africa. The 10 hectare large estate is known for it’s huge outdoor collection of succulent plants from around the globe (more than 2500 different registered species/subspecies/cultivars/etc.) and this collection is globally unmatched. The garden is already voted as “Best Garden in the Western Cape” (The Independent, UK) and on a recent garden tour in South Africa all VIPS of the Desert Botanical Garden voted for Soekershof as the “best garden experience in South Africa”. Soekershof invests also in talented people from communities in the Robertson Wine Valley. This is on a mutual beneficial base. Visitors of Soekershof can buy exclusive Soekershof Signature gifts made on the spot and they are invited to communicate with the artists. Products, amongst others are, jewelry made from earth, wire art, woodwork, etc. Locally soekershof is known for its extra-ordinary (sized) made maze with visualised local folklore as orientating beacons. A visit to Soekershof is not a ‘quicky’; schedule at least 2-3 hours but better is 3-4 hours to undergo it all in rural slow pace.
