Opera Australia set to make a big splash

Opera Australia has launched its most ambitious project yet – La Traviata – Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour 2012.

Developed in partnership with Events NSW with the support of Japanese philanthropist Dr Haruhisa Handa, the event will be a major drawcard for domestic and international tourism next year.

Set near Mrs Macquarie’s Chair in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour will offer “an experience like no other”, say organisers.

Audiences will enjoy views over the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, a gigantic scene on the water, world-class singers, an award-winning director from Broadway, a 10m x 10m crystal chandelier suspended in mid-air, singers arriving on stage by boat, Sydney drag queens taking La Traviata’s famous party scene by storm, and fireworks every night.

Accommodation and dining packages will also be available.

The event will run for three weeks in March-April 2012, with ticket prices ranging from $85 to $350.

Bookings are already open for groups and travel agents. Individual bookings will open on July 4.
