Operators resume Mexico programmes

Monday, 10 Nov, 2005 0

Mexico will outline its recovery plans at World Travel Market next week as the clean up operation from hurricane Wilma continues in the Yucatan peninsula.

Operators will shortly resume thier programmes to the region although many hotels and restaurants remain closed. Many are unlikley to open until the new year.

A delegation of senior executives, led by minister of tourism Rodolfo Elizondo Torres, will use WTM to update the trade on the situation.

They will also use the opportunity to urge operators – and consumers – not to abandon the destination.

“World Travel Market will be a great opportunity for us to show the trade that we will bounce back,” said Mexico Tourist Board UK regional director Manual Diaz Cebrian.

Thomson said it will resume its programme to Mexico on Saturday but only on a limited basis. While some hotels in Playacar are open, Cancun, the most severely damaged in the hurricane, is still out of bounds.

Gatwick charters will depart as usual on Saturday but the Manchester and Birmingham routes will be consolidated, a spokesman said.

Thomas Cook meanwhile will resume its programme on November 16 although it has yet to determine where will be operational.
