Orlando Airport mulls privatizing security
As the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority decides whether to ditch the TSA for private security contractors at Orlando international Airport, a change would likely not impact the traveling public much, the TSA said.
The GOAA is mulling outsourcing to a private security contractor, and it would be by far the largest airport in the country to shift to private security screening.
OIA is now the busiest airport in Florida, recently overtaking Miami.
So far 22 airports around the country have shifted to privatized screening, mostly to save costs.
If airport officials vote to replace the TSA with a private contractor a transition would likely take a year or more to complete.
The transition would be overseen by the TSA and screening methods would not change, said TSA division director Carolyn Dorgham.
Many current Orlando based TSA officers would also likely be recruited by the new security provider.
Orlando TSA agents screened more than 21.4 million passengers last year
Dorgham said there are about 15 companies equipped to provide the standard of airport screening required and all private employees undergo the same background checks as TSA officers.
