‘Outlier’ Canada reinstates Covid-19 testing
Mandatory random COVID-19 testing has restarted at the four main Canadian airports, Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, and Toronto, for fully vaccinated travelers arriving by air.
Travelers will be tested outside of airports, to ease pressure inside terminals.
Travelers picked for random testing will be notified via email within 15 minutes of completing customs checks.
Canada’s border measures will remain flexible and adaptable, guided by science and prudence,” Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Health said.
“We will keep adapting our border measures to balance the need to protect Canadians while supporting our economic recovery.”
Some medical experts are not convinced about the need to reinstate testing off travelers.
“It’s not entirely clear what’s happening with this data,” said infectious diseases specialist Dr. Isaac Bogoch on the CTV Your Morning show.
“I just think it would be helpful to hear from senior health officials, what’s being done with this data?”
Also, IATA slammed the Canadian government as an ‘outlier’
“While governments across the globe are rolling back restrictions, the government of Canada is reinstating them. The government should follow the lead of its peers,” said Peter Cerda, IATA’s VP for the Americas
“Rather than enabling travel and tourism to recover, those in power in Canada believe that throwing more red tape at the pandemic is the way forward.”
“Canada has become a total outlier in managing Covid-19 and travel.
Canada says about 5% of inbound will be randomly tested.
