Passenger smuggles knife aboard India flight to ‘expose security lapses’
Officials have launched a probe into security at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport after a passenger boarded a flight with a knife in his carry-on bag.
Once aboard the Goa-bound SpiceJet flight the man informed flight crew he was carrying a kitchen knife.
Officers from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) were called and he was taken off the aircraft and detained by airport police.
"A passenger on a Delhi-Goa flight reported to the cabin crew that he had a kitchen knife in his hand baggage. The aircraft had not taken off by that time," a SpiceJet statement said.
According to media quoting unnamed sources, the passenger intentionally brought the item in order to expose security loopholes.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh was also a passenger on the flight.
CISF said it is investigating the incident.
"We have ordered an inquiry and action will be taken against the personnel found responsible," a CISF spokesman said.
CISF is the organisation responsible for aviation security and baggage checks.
