Passengers injured after plane skids off runway
A Thai Airways plane skidded off the runway at Bangkok’s main international airport, injuring 14 people.
The aircraft was arriving from Guangzhou in China into Suvarnabhumi Airport.
Thai Airways said the landing gear malfunctioned, causing the aircraft to skid. Passengers were evacuated using emergency slides.
An investigation into Sunday night’s incident has begun.
The airline said in a statement: "After touchdown at Suvarnabhumi Airport, the landing gear malfunctioned and the aircraft skidded off the runway.
"Fire sparks were noticed from the vicinity right landing gear near the engine, the matter is under to be investigation."
A total of 288 passengers and 14 crew were on the plane, the airline said. The 14 injured passengers were taken to hospital.
Officials said the runway at Suvarnabhumi Airport would be temporarily closed.
Aviation website, The Aviation Herald, said a passenger reported that the aircraft touched down normally with its main gear, but when the nose gear touched down, the aircraft veered violently to the right, the aircraft appeared to roll left first then right.
They added when the aircraft came to a stop there was fire visible from the right hand side and an evacuation through the left hand doors was immediately initiated.
The incident occurred less than two weeks after 20 passengers were injured when a Thai Airways plane hit severe turbulence as it was descending to Hong Kong’s airport.
