Paying the price for expensive sunscreen
Seven out of 10 holidaymakers admit scrimping on the lotion to save money
Holidaymakers are risking their health by scrimping on sun tan lotion because it is becoming increasingly expensive, according to research.
A survey by Tesco revealed that 70 per cent of people use less lotion than they should in an effort to make it last longer – and half of those questioned knew they were risking their health by doing so.
The Daily Express, reporting the story, says a family of four was likely to spend £100 for enough lotion for a two-week holiday – but that most families take nowhere near than much with them. Incredibly, one in seven families never buys sun tan lotion because it is too expensive.
Sara Hiom, from Cancer Research UK, told the newspaper: “This survey confirms that people are failing to use enough sunscreen. People should be using factor 15-plus and applying generous amounts every two hours. It is worrying to see that high prices are putting people using necessary amounts. But sunscreen should be the last line of defence – people need to stay out of the sun around midday and wear hats and suitable clothing to protect their skin.”
