Pent-up demand brings tour biz prosperity
The health of the tour industry: in good shape.
“The tour industry is coming up roses, and for some companies, 2010 is shaping up to be better than they ever expected. Not only are all companies Travel Market Report spoke with trending well ahead of where they were at this time last year, but most also said they’re seeing the booking window up as well,” said the site.
“The travel machine is moving,” said Jennifer Halboth, director of marketing for the Globus family of brands. “People are starting to travel again and things are moving forward.”
Overall Globus is up 50 percent year-to-date, Monograms is up 60 percent, year-to-date and Avalon Waterways, the company’s river cruise division, is up almost 100 percent. But Globus is far from alone.
“Business has come back substantially over 2009,” said Paul Wiseman, president of Trafalgar Tours. “In fact, we passed the level that we had for 2008 about two weeks ago.”
Insight Vacations also surpassed 2008 metrics, said company president Marc Kazlauskas.
“We’re doing far better than I had budgeted for or than I expected. As a matter of fact, we’re doing better than 2008… we’re up about 16 percent over 2008, year-to-date vs. year-to-date.”
Tauck is also seeing strong growth, according to Tom Armstrong, Tauck corporate communications manager. “We’re up double digits in every region and all product categories,” he told TMR.
A prime reason for the upswing: pent-up demand.
