PEOPLExpress being booted from Newport News airport
Grounded budget carrier PEOPLExpress is being evicted from Virginia’s Newport News-Williamsburg Airport.
The airline says airport operator Peninsula Airport Commission have given it until February 2 to vacate its offices.
PEOPLExpress owes the airport $18,000 in utilities for the office space after racking up a bill for $100,000 in unpaid passenger service charges.
"We received an official notice from airport manager, Ken Spirito, that the airport is evicting People Express from its current office space effective February 2, 2015. We regret that Mr. Spirito and the Airport Commission consider it necessary to take this step as PEOPL Express is working diligently to resume offering flights," Steve Shatsky, vice president of marketing and sales said in a statement.
PEOPLExpress suspended service in late September after a vendor’s truck hit one of its planes, and it suffered further maintenance and crewing issues.
The carrier had only operated flights for three months since its launch before it was forced to ground its two leased aircraft.
