Perth says No, so Red Bull eyes Melbourne
Perth has grounded the international Red Bull Air Race with the state government saying it doesn’t represent value for money
Organisers of the event are trying to resurrect it in 2014 after it ran into financial difficulties after the 2010 race.
The global series sees pilots race against the clock through slalom-style inflatable air gates and pylons.
Among other destinations in Australia showing interest for the 2014 race if it goes ahead are Melbourne – possibly on a course over Albert Park Lake – and Queensland’s Gold Coast.
Race organisers have signed Malaysia as one of 10 hosts for 2014. Ontario and Mumbai are among other global contenders to host other stages.
Tourism Western Australia said the overall cost to the state government would have been about AUD26.5 million over three years, and didn’t represent good value for money.
