Peru’s Amazing Amazon Raft Race

Saturday, 06 Sep, 2011 0

More than 50 teams are expected to take part in the annual Great River Amazon Raft Race, starting October 6 in Peru.

The race is the longest of its kind in the world, with contestants travelling 180km over three days along the Amazon River.

Teams construct their own balsa-log rafts.

Last year teams from Peru, Australia, England, America, Ireland, Germany, Austria, France, Switzerland, Iran and Israel took part.

Each team is encouraged to gain sponsorship to donate to a charity of its choice.

Peru Tourism Board coordinator for Asia Pacific, Rosana Guinea, said the challenging but fun event has been growing in popularity over its 13 years.

For those who prefer to experience the world’s longest river more sedately, companies such as Aqua Expeditions and Delfin Amazon Cruises offer luxury cruises which set sail from Iquitos.

There are also a number of lodges available throughout the Amazon basin in Peru.
