‘Petty’ hotel thefts top $100 million

Friday, 10 Jul, 2006 0

When it comes to hotel pilferage, it’s not the businessmen but leisure travelers who are generally the culprits.

Such “petty” theft amounts to more than $100 million a year, according to the American Hotel Lodging Association.

Thefts often involve leisure travelers seeking souvenirs or mementoes removed from hotels of all types, ranging from luxury to budget.

“From the feedback we get, it’s clear this is an issue, to some degree, for all of them,” Amir Eylon, executive vice president of the Ohio Hotel & Lodging Association, told the Sacramento Business Journal.

Advances in technology and the industry’s move towards strictly credit card operations have helped reduce pilfering.
