Phuket introducing bike sharing
Thai holiday hotspot Phuket wants tourists and locals alike to get on their bike.
Keen to ease pollution on an island that sees more than five million tourists every year, Phuket is jumping on the bike sharing bandwagon.
Phuket is riding in tandem with Singapore based bike-sharing company oBike after signing an agreement to deploy up to 1,000 bikes island-wide.
"The launch of oBike supports our move towards transforming Phuket into a smart city as part of the Thailand 4.0 economic model development," said Norraphat Plodthong, Governor of Phuket.
"With commuter data, we will be able to make better informed planning of our island’s transport infrastructure to improve mobility on our island."
oBike recently launches in Hong Kong and has announced plans to enter the Bangkok market too.
The company also has a presence in Malaysia andIndonesia.
"We aim to leverage the power of technology and transform the way people commute," said Edward Chen, co-founder and chief marketing officer of oBike.
The Phuket launch also sees the first deployment of its three gear bicycles.
Initially Phuket Old Town will be the focus, aimed at cutting down congestion and encouraging cycling for short journeys.
