Pilots protest in Paris as Air France cancellations continue
Around 200 pilots protested in Paris yesterday as the Air France strike threatens to continue until next Tuesday.
Dressed in full uniform, the pilots gathered outside the National Assembly in a dispute over the company’s plan to expand its low cost business.
It is the second week of the strike which is now expected to last until Tuesday, September 30.
Today, 420 Air France flights have already been cancelled.
Air France said on its website: "Due to some pilots’ strike action, from September 15th to 22nd, and due to the extension of the social movement from September 23rd to 30th, our flight schedule operated by Air France remains still disrupted.
"If you are travelling on a flight operated by Air France, we propose you to modify your departure to avoid the period from September 15th to 30th 2014."
The airline said passengers can postpone travel until October 16th, 2014 included, at no extra cost in the same cabin, on the website.
For re-booking flights from today to September 30th, it said to note that the Flights Schedule is updated 24h before the flight departure. Cancellations are therefore still possible until this update.
Refunds for cancelled flights and those delayed by more than 5 hours are also available.
Earlier this month, Air France announced a plan to more than double the number of passengers carried on its budget airline Transavia by 2017, and expand its operations outside France.
France’s junior minister for transport, Alain Vidalies, said on RMC radio today that Air France was withdrawing the plan in the face a protracted strike by pilots.
But Air France spokesman Cedric Leurquin told The Associated Press that there has been "no change in the negotiations."
