Plane door lands on golf course mid-flight
A group of North Carolina golfers had an interesting story to tell at the 19th hole after a panel door from a American Airlines jet came crashing down onto a golf course just feet away.
The object was described as ‘falling from the sky, twirling around in circles and landed approximately 40 yards to the right of the green’ near the 7th hole at the Green Meadows golf course at Mount Holly, North Carolina.
The panel door was from a hydraulic servicing area which is not a pressurized section of the aircraft which was carrying 146 passengers.
It did not cause a flight safety issue, American said, and the jet landed without incident at Charlotte Douglas Airport.
"It was flying right over top of our heads," golfer Brian Francis said, who along with his two playing partners was just feet away from where the panel door landed.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident.
"American Airlines 1910, an Airbus 321 aircraft, lost a small panel door while on approach to Charlotte-Douglas Airport this morning. A golfer called the FAA and reported that the panel fell on the Green Meadows Golf Course in Mt. Holly, NC," a FAA statement said.
