P&O Cruises crew member dies in ship accident
P&O Cruises has confirmed a crew member has died in an accident on ship Arvia.
It is said to have happened on Sunday, just a couple of days after departing Southampton.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with their family and friends both on board and at home and we are providing every possible support to them,” the cruise line said.
The ship is en route to Barbados and is scheduled to call at Sint Maarten, St. Kitts, St. Lucia among other stops.
Its first port of call was Tenerife but made an unscheduled stop in northern Spain due to a ‘workplace accident.’
“Yesterday the Arvia made a stop in A Coruña following an accident involving a deceased crew member,” the Spanish port said in a X post.
The ship was docked there for several hours.
P&O Cruises has shared few details about the incident, however the UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch listed an incident on the ship as a ‘lift shaft accident.’
The agency will conduct an accident investigation.
