‘Pop up hotel’ planned for 2018 Russia World Cup
Following a dearth of hotel rooms and inflated prices at the recent Brazil World Cup, football’s governing body FIFA is taking a more proactive approach for the next tournament kicking off in Russia in 2018.
FIFA World Cup organizers have signed an agreement with Snoozebox, a London company which transforms old shipping containers into ‘pop up’ hotels.
According to a report in The Moscow Times, a 2,000-room ‘Snoozebox Football Village’ is planned for host city Saransk using modified shipping containers which can be installed within 48 hours.
Snoozebox container rooms, which have been installed previously at the London 2012 Olympic Games and other sporting events, feature two beds, an en-suite bathroom, Wi-Fi and TV.
On the site, pop up restaurants and shops will be installed along with a large outdoor screen to screen live World Cup matches.
Accommodating the huge number of traveling fans is a major headache at every World Cup tournament and some host cities in Russia are relatively small in size with limited accommodation options such as Saransk and Kaliningrad.
