Possible Heathrow Border Force strike could disrupt Easter holidays

Unions are warning of possible travel chaos at Heathrow Airport during the Easter holidays.

Hundreds of Border Force officers could strike over new working conditions.

A Ballot for industrial action began before the weekend and runs 22 March.

That means airport strike action could coincide with the Easter holidays.

The PCS union says airport managers are effectively forcing Border Force officers out.

“One aspect of the plans would force workers to choose between finding another job or losing their allowances, another would see others having to sign up to new, exhausting shifts or leaving altogether,” said Fran Heathcote, General Secretary

PCS says workers are strongly opposed to new proposals to radically changes to shift patterns and working conditions.

“Make no mistake, its outsourcing plans are detrimental to the interests of workers, passengers and airlines alike,” a Unite union spokesperson said.

It is a ‘brazen attempt to profiteer at the expense of members,’ the union said.

“Unite is considering all options in response to these plans, including strike action.”

“No jobs are at risk, and we have plans in place to keep the airport operating smoothly throughout this transition,” the airport said.
