Qantas announces mobile phone trial
Qantas has announced that passengers will soon be able to use their mobile phones to send text messages and emails in the sky, with a three month trial about to strart on a Boeing 767.
Passengers will be able to send and receive SMS messages and emails, but voice calls will be banned and Virgin Blue may soon follow, with the airline indicating the idea was being considered.
A Qantas spokesman said the 767 would be fitted with technology to effectively enable passengers to use their phones, with mobiles needing to be converted to international roaming and the cost of text messages and emails depending on the carrier.
The spokesman said the trial, in conjunction with Telstra, Panasonic Avionics Corporation and AeroMobile, would be on a domestic aircraft and if successful, it is likely to be used on other planes.
