Qantas domestic up, but…………international down

An AAP report says that Qantas Airways Ltd carried more domestic passengers but less international customers in January compared to the corresponding month a year ago, the airline’s latest traffic figures show.

Qantas carried 1.35 million domestic passengers in the month, up 2.7 per cent, while international passengers fell 4.6 per cent to 731,000.

Overall, the number of passengers carried was up 5.6 per cent to 3.23 million in January, from January 2007.

Qantas said domestic traffic as measured by revenue passenger kilometres (RPKs) rose 2.7 per cent.

Capacity as measured by available seat kilometres (ASKs) was up three per cent.

This resulted in a revenue seat factor of 80.5 per cent, which was 0.2 percentage points lower than January the previous year.

International RPKs was down 2.3 per cent and ASKs down by 3.2 per cent.

That resulted in revenue seat factor of 87.4 per cent, up 0.8 percentage points on January 2007.

January group RPKs rose 4.3 per cent, ASKs were up 3.7 per cent resulting in a revenue seat factor of 84.2 per cent, which was 0.5 percentage points higher than the previous year.

In the financial year to January 2008, group passenger numbers were up 6.6 per cent from the previous year to 23.02 million.

RPKs increased by six per cent, while ASKs rose 3.9 per cent, resulting in a revenue seat factor of 82.4 per cent, which was 1.6 percentage points higher than the previous year.

Qantas’ low cost airline Jetstar carried 680,000 domestic passengers in January, up 12.8 per cent on January 2007.

Jetstar International carried 149,000 passengers in January, up 65.7 per cent on the 90,000 carried in the previous corresponding month.
