Qantas, Jetstar, extend flight cancellations into July
Qantas and low cost unit Jetstar have again extended cancellations.
The airlines cancelled domestic and New Zealand flights until at least the end of June 2020, and international services currently halted will continue to be grounded through July.
Qantas Group is currently operating only 13% of its normal domestic schedule and a handful of international flights.
Customers impacted by the extended cancellations will be contacted by the airline in the coming days.
The airline group expects domestic restrictions to be eased slightly by the end of July but the scale of travel demand is still very uncertain.
"Australia has done an amazing job of flattening the curve and we’re optimistic that domestic travel will start returning earlier than first thought, but we clearly won’t be back to pre-coronavirus levels anytime soon," said Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce.
International travel could be off limits until 2021 but the proposed trans-Tasman ‘travel bubble’ to New Zealand would be a welcome boost for both countries’ beleaguered tourism industries.
"With the possible exception of New Zealand, international travel demand could take years to return to what it was," Joyce added.
