Rebel Sport and Flight Centre

Wednesday, 12 Mar, 2007 0

Media reports in all the major news papers over the weekend have highlighted the scenarios at Rebel Sport and Flight Centre as a warning of what might happen to APA’s bid to purchase Qantas, with the the Flight Centre deal falling at the final hurdle, when Lazards refused to accept the offer $1.6b offer by Pacific Equity Partners and the Directors of Flight Centre, including Skroo Turner and the deal went hurting down the gurgler.

It also now looks likely that the same will happen at Rebel Sport with Paradice Investment Management who owns 7.69% of Rebel declaring that the share price looks cheap at current levels and potentially joining with other institutional shareholders to block the sale, with 75% support required to make the deal go through.

At Qantas and APA, 90% support is required with UBS and Balanced Equity Management owning 10% between them, with other institutional investors now also very likely to join them, with a very strong possibility that this will block the APA deal.

While retail investors seem to support these deals and like to take a relatively quick profit, it is the institutional investors that are now flexing their muscles in private equity deals as they can see potential profit the private equity consortiums will be raking in only a short time down the track and they want a piece of the action and who would blame them with such vast profits at stake!
