Record-setting year at Indy Airport despite setbacks

Friday, 20 Feb, 2006 0

Despite setbacks such as airline cutbacks, Indianapolis International Airport set an all-time record last year with 8.5 million passengers.

The 2005 passenger count was up 6.2% over the previous year. It was the third consecutive growth year for the airport.

Officials cited increased competition and lower fares as reasons for the record year.

The move came despite the pullout of two airlines, ATA and independence Air.

There were also cutbacks by Northwest, which is the facility’s top carrier.

The facility’s record may be hard to beat this year, reported airport chief Patrick Dooley in a news release. The loss of some airlines and cutbacks could have an impact in 2006.

The airport is undergoing a $1 billion-plus expansion that will add 40 gates opening in late 2008.
