Record year for DC tourism
The nation’s capital had a good year for tourism in 2014, with a big surge in foreign visitors.
Washington DC welcomed a record 20.2 million visitors last year, fueled by a 16% uptick in foreign tourists.
Tourism marketing agency Destination DC said the 1.9 million international visitors which visited in 2014 was the biggest annual increase in five years.
The top five markets were China, the UK, Germany, France and Australia, with overseas tourists making up 9% of total visitation. It said.
However foreign tourists contribute 27% of visitor spending with an average of $518 per stay.
DC also saw an increase in domestic tourism for the fifth consecutive year, up 5.7% in 2014.
