Relief in Hong Kong as SARS tests prove negative
There was good news for Hong Kong on Friday after 18 people who it was feared could be suffering from Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) were found to have influenza.
Officials said tests had “yielded positive results for Influenza A” while none had come up positive for SARS.
There had been fears that SARS could have returned to Hong Kong, inflicting further damage on the territory’s already battered tourist industry.
Only mainland China had more cases of SARS, with 296 of Hong Kong’s residents dying from the respiratory illness.
In total SARS has killed around 800 people worldwide.
While the World Health Organisation has said the virus is now contained, there are fears that it could easily make a come back.
