Research report on Aussie travel

Sunday, 30 Nov, 2005 0

Recent research completed as part of the Stollznow Travel Monitor shows that just over half (53%) of Australians are currently planning to travel in the next 12 months with a further one in five (18%) who may travel.

There is an average of 2.99 trips planned for domestic tourism and an average of 0.51 trips planned for overseas travel.

The three top domestic destinations are NSW, Queensland and Victoria.  The three top overseas destinations are New Zealand, Britain/UK and the USA.

The time spent away from home varies dramatically between overseas and domestic destinations.  Overall people plan to spend 10.68 days away from home.  Domestic destinations have an average length of 8.57 days while overseas destinations have an average of 21.64 days.

While it is obvious that overseas travel will take longer than domestic travel it is possibly unexpected that overseas travel is almost two-thirds longer than domestic travel.

The result is that domestic travel has a low yield from the combination of lower commissions and much shorter lengths of stay.
