Taking Responsibility for Your Sustainability – Alberta to host international conference on responsible tourism

The International Centre for Responsible Tourism Canada, Inc. (ICRT Canada) will be hosting the 5th International Conference on Responsible Tourism in Destinations (RTD5) in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada June 27-29, 2011 at the University of Alberta Lister Centre.

Responsible tourism is about making, “better places for people to live in and better places for people to visit,” says Professor Harold Goodwin, international expert from Britain and founder of the ICRT network.

ICRT Canada Director, Laura McGowan, is “thrilled to bring this conference to Alberta – to showcase Alberta’s diverse culture and authentic experiences.”

Previous conferences have been held in South Africa, India, Belize and Oman.

The RTD5 conference will discuss five themes that have attracted speakers from across Canada and around the world. The themes include local economic development in developed countries, polar tourism, indigenous tourism, access for all, and governance.

A concurrent Youth Conference on Responsible Tourism will also take place on June 27, 2011. The Youth Conference will introduce and engage students aged 16-25 in responsible tourism themes and address the role of youth in developing a responsible tourism industry.
