BROOME – Tourism development in the Pilbara and Kimberley regions of Western Australia received a boost this week with the announcement of the continued partnership between mining giant Rio Tinto and Australia’s North West Tourism.

The new three-year sponsorship contributes $150,000 to further develop the Warlu Way Drive Trail, a 2,400-km self-drive trail linking major tourism icons between Exmouth and Broome including Ningaloo Reef, Karijini and Millstream National Parks, and the rock art of the Burrup Peninsula.

Chairman of Australia’s North West Tourism, Ian Laurance, said the ongoing partnership with Rio Tinto was important for tourism in the Pilbara and Kimberley regions.

“The Warlu Way is a catalyst for not only promoting the attractions of the region, but also in encouraging further development of the tourism industry, particularly for indigenous communities

Rio Tinto Iron Ore chief executive, Sam Walsh, said Rio Tinto prides itself on having a role in the community and that he was excited to help others follow the new Warlu Way.

“Rio Tinto’s iron ore operations form such a critical part of the history of the modern Pilbara. Working with Australia’s North West Tourism, we can enhance the tourism opportunities we already provide, such as public tours of our Pilbara operations and public access to our rail service road between Karratha and Tom Price.”

In addition to the Warlu Way initiative, Rio Tinto is a major sponsor of the upcoming inaugural Warlu Way conference in Karratha on the September 2-3.
