Ronald Reagan Airport re-opens

Saturday, 25 Oct, 2005 0

General aviation traffic is starting again this week on a limited basis to and from Washington’s once-popular Ronald Reagan National Airport, which has been closed since 9-11.

The airport in Virginia is close to the White House, the Capitol and other landmark areas. Security reasons were cited for its long closure to private flights.

The airport will have space for up to 48 flights, said a spokesman for the National Air Transportation Association for certain approved corporate and charter aircraft.  Special requirements include background checks and vetting of all passengers and crew, departure from one of twelve approved gateway airports, the carrying of an armed security officer aboard the aircraft, as well as other government permissions and permits for each flight.

He added because of security concerns, it will take some time before the airport again operates at its maximum strength.
