Royal Caribbean issues Legionnaires’ disease warning
Royal Caribbean issued a health warning to guests booked on Symphony of the Seas for a cruise this week that a guest on a previous cruise was diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease.
The guest was diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease only later after returning from the cruise. It is still not clear how or where the person contracted it.
The health advisory was issued after the cruise line was notified after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“While they are unsure where the guest was exposed, an individual who recently sailed on Symphony of the Seas was later diagnosed with Legionella,” a letter from the cruise line to guests booked on the April 30 cruise said.
“As a precautionary measure, we implemented heightened sanitation protocols and followed all CDC guidance.”
Legionnaires’ disease is not spread from person to person and is contracted by the inhaling of small water droplets containing the bacteria.
It is most often present in water systems including hot tubs.
The upcoming voyage is a nine-night Eastern Caribbean sailing from Cape Liberty, New Jersey.
A similar letter was sent to guests who travelled on previous cruises on the ship in March and April.
