Royal Caribbean sued for alleged negligence

A passenger has filed a lawsuit against Royal Caribbean claiming the cruise line was negligent for allowing the Anthem of the Seas to sail into the eye of a major storm earlier this month.

Bruce Simpson claims he was knocked unconscious and sustained injuries to his face, torso and hands when he was flung across his cabin, according to legal documents seen by CNN.

Simpson also alleges there were limited emergency services available to passengers.

The lawsuit states he was told to stay inside his cabin to ride out the storm before seeking any medical assistance.

The suit was filed in a Miami court and alleges the cruise line was negligent by allowing the ship to sail into the storm, which was well forecast as potentially dangerous.

"They took a calculated risk when they sent their passengers into the storm, and we don’t think the passengers should be the ones that pay for Royal Caribbean’s lack of judgment," attorney Jason Itkin said in a statement.

The cruise from New Jersey to the Bahamas was eventually aborted and the ship was forced to return to port three days early due to extensive damage, which included smashed windows and loose balcony railings.
