Royal Caribbean to capitalise on cruise growth Down Under

Royal Caribbean Cruises is to open a dedicated Australian office in Sydney to tap into the region’s growth potential for cruises.

The Australia office will continue the company’s international expansion plans and support the growing demand for itineraries in the South Pacific and around the world.

The 1,998-passenger ship Rhapsody of the Seas will embark on its third season in the South Pacific and Australia next year.

Former P&O Cruises’ Australia managing director Gavin Smith has moved from Jetset Travelworld to head Royal Caribbean’s operations in Australia.

The office will replace sub agent Discover the World Marketing in Australia for 17 years.

Discover the World Marketing will continue to represent the line in Guatemala, Colombia, Thailand and Pakistan.

The move follows rival Carnival announcing that its two ships currently operating for Ocean Village will be moved to operate from Australia over the next two years.

Royal Caribbean senior vice president of international Michael Bayley said: “This region shows great growth potential in terms of providing new destinations for international cruise guests from North America, Europe and Asia, giving them exceptional port options that explore the beauty and uniqueness of Australia.

“This, coupled with the knowledge that Australia is a substantial source market for new cruise guests, gives us tremendous opportunity for growth in the region.”

Discover the World Marketing managing director Richard Cranmer said: “We’ve really enjoyed introducing Australians to three of Royal Caribbean’s unique brands.

“We have developed a team that really understands and is passionate about the brands, and that enjoys offering Australian guests a unique and award-winning cruise experience.”
