Royal Caribbean’s Mexico Perfect Day project faces local backlash
Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day Mexico project is facing major pushback from local residents.
Over 200,000 signatures have been collected opposing the private destination at Mahahual.
Royal Caribbean is building a major water park and day resort at the beside the Port of Mahahual which s expected to open in 2027.
“This massive project threatens the very existence of Mahahual, a coastal town bordering the world’s second-largest coral reef. This project involves the construction of a 90-hectare water park on a protected mangrove forest, a natural barrier essential to marine life, ecological balance, and our future,” petition organizer Morgane Vainberg wrote.
“This project directly threatens: our rights of access and use of the sea, beaches, and mangroves, our local identity and our way of life. We are not opposed to development or tourism. But we believe in a model based on sustainability, respect for ecosystems, and justice for local communities”
Royal Caribbean has now taken over administrative control of the port.
Perfect Day Mexico’s Loco Waterpark and Splash Cove will feature dozens of slides, a lazy river and adult only and family zones.
will feature Jaguar’s Peak, dubbed the tallest waterslide tower in the Americas, the tallest family raft slide, and the world’s longest lazy river at Splash Cove. It will also have dedicated adult-only and dedicated family zones.
