Ryanair faces strike action in Spain

Tuesday, 30 Dec, 2018 0

Ryanair cabin crew are threatening three days of strike action in January unless the airline agrees to give them local contracts.

USO and Sitcpla, the two unions representing the airline’s staff in Spain, are calling for 24-hour~strikes on January 8, 10 and 13.

They are demanding contracts under local law rather than the~current Irish contracts used by the airline.

Jairo Gonzalo, secretary of Organizaci-³n de USO at Ryanair, said: "After everything that has already been said and done by the courts, the Labour Inspectorate and the European Commission during 2018, it is disgusting that Ryanair continues to refuse to accept the national law…as already in Germany and France."

Ryanair has suffered a spate of strikes in the last 12 months since it began recognising unions for the first time.

In July, pilots and cabin crew went on strike in Ireland, Italy, Portugal and Spain, affecting around 100,000 travellers.

In September 28, cabin crew walked out in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Portugal and Spain.

Meanwhile, hundreds of Spanish airport workers at Madrid Barajas airport have gone on strike because they have not been paid a bonus they claim was promised to them.

They are also taking action because they haven’t been given warm enough clothing to cope with the cold weather.

About 300 security officers employed by Eulen say they will not resume work at the airport until at least January 21.

The union, Alternativa Sindical, is accusing Eulen’s management of ‘contempt’ for the working conditions.
