Ryanair facing new union challenge
Ireland: Balpa says it wants to meet executives over Buzz statement
Ryanair is facing a challenge from the pilots’ union buzz after threatening to close down Buzz after buying it from KLM.
As reported by News From Abroad, Ryanair agreed to buy its low-cost rival two weeks ago, and immediately announced plans to lay off some 18 per cent of the Buzz workforce.
The Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary reportedly told Buzz workers that if they threatened to strike over the matter, he would close the airline down. Ryanair famously does not recognise unions for its workforce, which numbers more than 2,000.
But now the pilots’ union Balpa has requested a meeting with Ryanair “to see how we can work together”. In 2001, Balpa tried to challenge for rights for the carrier’s pilots based at Luton, Stansted and Prestwick airports, and has vowed to repeat the challenge this year.
And, according to the Financial Times, the TGWU is also considering a challenge to Ryanair’s anti-union stand.
