Ryanair launches dedicated US website

Europe’s largest budget carrier has launched a dedicated US website, with a slogan urging Americans to "trade Route 66 for the Wild Atlantic Way".

The website www.ryanair.com/us has gone live and features options to book any of the carrier’s 180 European routes in US dollars.

The airline said most of its US travelers are from California, New York, Texas, Florida and New Jersey, and London, Dublin, Barcelona, Rome and Paris are their most visited cities.

The site has the ‘fare finder’ option allowing customers to find the lowest available fares filtered by route and travel period.

The US roll-out comes ahead of Ryanair’s stated aim of introducing low cost transatlantic flights in the next few years.

Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary said last month flying from up to 15 European airports to about a dozen US cities is feasible, but sourcing suitable long haul aircraft is the major obstacle for the carrier.

"We would need a fleet of long haul aircraft. There is a historical shortage. We can’t get the aircraft we need for three or four years," O’Leary said.

It also coincides with a more customer friendly approach by the airline after years of stinging criticism for poor service and controversial PR stunts.

"It’s not enough to be the cheapest anymore. We need to be the cheapest, the best and the friendliest," O’Leary said.

"We can’t be Robin Hood anymore, we need to be the caring, cuddly Sheriff of Nottingham."
