Save up for summer hols – stay with the in-laws at Christmas

Wednesday, 10 Dec, 2008 0

Cost conscious people are preparing to save cash this Christmas so they have money to spare for their summer 2009 holiday.

A survey of 925 UK travellers shows that a fifth (21%) hope to save between £200 and £300.

One in five (18%) plan to spend Christmas with their in-laws in to save money for their summer break, according to the research by Expedia.co.uk.

More than three-quarters (79%) of people are looking for ways to curb the cost of Christmas this year, with the same number budgeting less than £500 in total.

But the majority would actually rather be abroad enjoying snow or winter sun.

And 40% would rather be relaxing in the sun – with the US, Canada and the Caribbean topping the nation’s most wanted winter destinations.

A spokeswoman said: “Determined Brits are set on saving their pennies this Christmas in order to keep their week in the sun in 2009, even if it means giving up their peace and quiet by spending it with the in-laws.”
